We may have seen various kinds of houses that differ in their design, interior and outlook. Here is presenting a very special house that had hidden a lot of wonders inside it. It is situated in Koothuparambu of Kannur district. It is a mesmerizing house of Mr.Rakesh, named as ‘Odhayoth Veed’. The designer of the house is Mr.Rakesh himself who is a teacher by profession.
There is a huge and elegant ‘Padippura’ at the front which is the entrance to the house. When the Padippura is opened, we can see a lot of crafts and decors that fills the forefront ground. There are two sculptures of lions at two sides of the door and a beautiful garden with pretty plants that is grown with a combination of natural stone landscaping. The front view itself gives a rich and royal look to the house.
When we get into the house first we see a sit out with traditional furnishings that includes a traditional chair that our ancestors used to sit and relax. There is a lengthy wooden bench to sit upon too. The first glimpse itself gives a warm feel of olden days. Then there is Nadumuttam constructed in the form of Nalukettu with a deep pond in its center and it’s rooftop with an open design covered with transparent glass. There is also steps provided so that it is easy to get into the pond. As the rooftop is open it serves as the biggest source of light to the house. Direct sunlight and daylight come inside through this.
The main attraction of this house is that it is constructed mostly using Vettukallu. It has the ‘Padakolai’ flooring which can be seen in ancient muslim royal houses. The Tv in this house has a speciality that if we are watching a cookery channel, the smell of the food can be sensed and enjoyed. The house owner himself have found a technology for it. The Nalukett is surrounded with pillars and varandas around it and the varandas have rooms next to it. There is a ‘Poojamuri’ with its door decorated with lot of bells. There is an open dining hall after it and a kitchen next to it.
Spaces at the opposite sides of the Nalukett is set purposely to meet different kinds of needs. There is an open area set as an office room, study room or a library. It also have an ironing table in it. Though this house is constructed by giving importance to traditional look and feel, the important parts of the house like it’s kitchen and bedroom is designed with all the modern amenities.
The kitchen is covered with a lot of cabinets and shelves that can hold a lot of items like crockeries, utensils, electronic appliances and everything that a kitchen needs. It also have a double door fridge. The bedroom have a blue light setting and looks elegant. It has all the modern amenities and it’s biggest attraction is the open bathroom with transparent glass sliding. There is also a Almirah made of modern technology.
This house is two storeyed and have steps to go to the first floor. The real beauty of the Nalukett is understood when looked from the top. It’s three sides have open varandas and the fourth side decorated with a special design. There is also an open bedroom setup in one corner where we can have a cozy sleep after a lunch. It can be used as a leisure are when there is guests arrives. It rooftops is completely did using wooden panels.
An another exclusive part of this wonder house is the ‘Theatre’. It has an air conditioned theatre of its own with a lot of seating where the family members, friends of guests can watch movies at an elegant comfy theatre with the real feel of being at an original movie theatre. An another feature is that even though it is a three bedroom house, a lot of people can be accommodated in its top area.
When we look at the gardens of this house there is a natural grass lawn and lots of plants. Landscaping is done using natural stones and fixing artificial grasses between them. An automatic plant watering system is set here so that even if there is no one at the house , the plants won’t suffer the shortage of water. It is a programming design connected to the motor. If a message is send to On then water gets On automatically.
While construction they had used a very less amount of cement and sand. Most of the areas of the house is build using Natural stones including the flooring. A finished look has given to the stones through polishing. Many traditional hints can be found inside this house which brings warmth and coolness to one’s eyes and heart.
Mr.Rakesh lives with his joint family here consisting of his parents, singing, wife and children. It is a house build by the combination of traditional factors and modern amenities and facilities. Living inside the house gives both a warm feel of good golden days and all the facilities of a modern house. Giving importance to nature, Rakesh has tried to build a nature inside his reside.
