During olden days we had a lot of water resources. Rivers, lakes , canals , ponds and small water bodies were plenty at that time. All of them had a lot of water in it too. The water gets purified through the nature itself and was pure and safe for consumption or other purposes. As technology started increasing our nature started getting polluted and so the water reservoirs.
Due to climatic change and over pollution our water resources started draining and become unsafe for consumption and even difficult to use for household purposes. Shortage of water brought the ‘bottled water’ trend. Things have changed from never having to doubt about the purity of water during old days, undergoing a water purification method has become necessary now.
That’s how water purifiers got it’s wide popularity. People prefer it and love using it. It gives a feeling of safe and pure water while drinking and also protects our body from harmful effects that contaminated water consumption can bring you home. But before buying a water purifier there are certain things that one must know. Our purifier should match to our need and status of water that we use.
Depending on the water purification methods water purifiers are classified into 5 types.Reverse Osmosis(RO), Ultraviolet(UV),UltraFiltration(UF), Activated Carbon and Sediment filter are them. Drinkable water have parameters that confirm the water as consumable or not. It is by testing the water we find whether the water we use meets this parameters. These parameters decide whether we can drink it or not.
The water that we use have lots of physical, chemical and biological contaminations. We have to purify it before drinking. For example if we drink a water that is high in iron content it will make us sick. The water purifier purifies these contaminations that are harmful to our body, by meeting the parameters set by The Indian Standard Organization.
Mainly the water treatments are divided into three as domestic, commercial and industrial. A water get polluted mainly in three ways. One is physical that occurs through mud and waste. Next is the chemical contamination that happens by the pollution from factories and the chemicals of domestic use. Biological contaminations occur through the presence of bacteria.
We might boil the water before using so that the bacteria’s in it will get destroyed. But it will reduce the amount of Oxygen present in the water. If we are using bore well water it will be high in iron content that is not good for our body. So the purpose of a water purifier is to provide the lack of needed ingredients in the water and remove the unwanted particles. For this we have to test the water first and choose the purifier accordingly.
The cheapest among the water purifier is that works with gravity. This works by pouring water into the filter and it comes purified through filters. But this only providers a small amount of water at a time and we have to fill it whenever it gets empty. Other is the RO which means Reverse Osmosis. It uses a partially permeable membrane that removes ions, unwanted molecules and chemical particles from fmdrinking water.
It also increases the taste of water by removing the unessential salt. It is also recommended when the water we drink has higher concentration of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) like sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, etc. It softens and sweetens the taste of water, while retaining only pure drinking water which is safe to consume.
The next method is the Ultra Voilet method. It is the most effective method of disinfecting bacteria from the water. Disinfecting the water with Ultraviolet light is exceptionally simple, effective and environmentally safe process. It is chemical, odour and taste free. It is extremely effective and requires very little energy. It has low maintenance.
