Kizhi Porotta is a trending food among people recently. It has become available in hotels and restaurants. This kizhified variety of porotta bagged inside a heaten banana leaf is amazing in its aroma and taste. It’s smell is enough to run water in everyone’s mouth. So let’s make it easily at home!
Ingredients
Chicken cut into small pieces 1/2 kg
Cooked Porotta 2
Oil 2 tbsp
Ginger
Garlic
Cumin 1/2 tsp
Green chilly 3 nos
Peppercorns
Shallot 1 cup
Tomato 1 nos
Red chilly powder 2 tbsp
Coriander powder 1 tbsp
Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste
Curry leaves
Coriander leaves
Banana Leaf 1
Heat oil in a pan and add coconut pieces cut into thin smaller pieces. After it got golden colour add a cup of shallots to it and salute well. Add 3 tbsp of the mix prepared by blending garlic, ginger, green chillies , peppercorns and cumin. Add finely chopped pieces of a tomato.
Cook by closing the lid until the oil gets oozes off. Add 1/2 tsp turmeric powder , 2 tbsp red chilly powder , 1 tbsp coriander powder, salt to taste and saute well. Now add cleaned chicken pieces and mix well so that all the masala will penetrate into the chicken.
Add curry leaves and a quarter cup of warm water. Water will ooze from the chicken gradually. Close it and cook for 15 – 20 minutes. After that add some coriander leaves above it. Turn off the flame and keep it aside for resting.Now the masala for kizhi porotta is ready!
To make the kizhi take a banana leaf and clean it well. Heat the banana leaf in low flame to soften it. If not softened it will tear apart while making the kizhi.Now place the banana leaf one above the other in opposite directions in a plate.
Make sure the leaf size is big enough to make a kizhi. Now place a porotta at the centre of the leaf. Spread the chicken masala over it according to your preference. Place an another porotta above and spread the chicken again.
Now gently fold the leaf like a bag or kizhi using the thread of the plantain tree. Chances are less for the kizhi to broke but take care while folding. Now the kizhi is ready.
Now place this kizhi inside a steamer and give it a good steam by closing the lid of the steamer. Remove the kizhi from the steamer after some time. Open the kizhi by untying the fold and it’s all ready to eat!
